Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus, has built a reputation for being a true Christmas town. End your first day with a traditional meal in Rovaniemi’s plush restaurants, or head out to experience a traditional kota dinner (a wilderness hut-inspired restaurant, often with an open fire). Also worth trying is the Ice Restaurant at the Arctic SnowHotel. This is truly a unique experience.

Snowmobile Safari to Santa Claus Village

Your Lapland Christmas Holiday wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Santa Claus Village. On your first full day in Rovaniemi we suggest checking it out. What better way to experience Christmas in Lapland, than combining this with another fun activity – snowmobiling. You will be picked up from Rovaniemi and taken to a nearby wilderness resort where your activity will start. Once there, your guide will tell you everything you need to know about the activity and safety. After this, your 4 mile (7 km) snowmobile safari to Santa Claus Village will start.

To drive the snowmobile you need to be at least 18 years old and own a valid drivers license. Two adults share a snowmobile and children under the age of 15 are seated in a sled behind the guide’s snowmobile.

Once you reach Santa Claus Village you will have a chance to meet Santa himself, send letters from the official Santa Claus Post Office, do some shopping and get a certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle. Tasty lunch in a cosy restaurant is included in the tour.

Visit Santa Park, Northern Lights Hunting

Today you have a free day to do your own thing. If you wish to immerse yourself even more in the magic of Christmas and create lasting memories, head to SantaPark. This indoor Christmas theme park offers a range of activities and experiences for visitors of all ages. This is a perfect addition to your Christmas itinerary.

You can meet Santa Claus there and take photos with him, you can also enrol in Elf School and learn how to become an elf and make Christmas crafts. SantaPark Rovaniemi also has an Ice Bar where you can enjoy drinks in a frozen setting, take a magical train ride through Santa’s underground cavern and join in on different workshops from gingerbread making to making different Christmas ornaments.

Another must see is the fun and engaging Elf Show. During the show Santa’s elves entertain visitors with music, dancing, and storytelling. The performance is typically held several time throughout the day, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

In the evening it’s time for another must-do activity in Lapland – Northern Lights Hunting. Taking our Aurora hunting tour with a professional photographer gives you the best chances of seeing this unpredictable natural phenomenon. Our tour guides are familiar with the local weather patters, solar activity, and other factors that influence the chances of seeing the Northern Lights.

Before your tour starts, they will determine the best places for aurora sighting, away from city lights and other sources of light pollution, and will take you there. If it turns out that your chances of seeing the lights are far away, sometimes as far as Sweden, your guide will drive there. That’s why it’s important to be flexible and open to staying up late, so if you have small children, this tour might not be suitable for them and we’d suggest changing to a more family friendly option.

Finnish Christmas Traditions

What could be more fun than learning about Finnish Christmas traditions. Today you will be picked up from your accommodation and taken to a nearby cottage to find out how Finnish people celebrate Christmas. After you arrive in the cottage, sitting by the heated fireplace, you’ll make traditional Christmas decorations or bake gingerbread cookies.

You will then get to decorate a Christmas tree and even send a letter to Santa Claus. An old friend of Santa will deliver the letter so you can be sure that he will receive it. After all these activities, it’s time to set the table, and enjoy a traditional Finnish Christmas meal. You get to try Christmas porridge made of rice, with prune soup; fish with side dishes; and traditional beverages and coffee and tea. This is a true Lapland Christmas experience!

Taxis are also available from Rovaniemi to Santa Claus Village. Taxis can be hailed on the street, booked in advance through a taxi company. The journey takes around 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Unfortunately it’s not possible to take your own photos with Santa Claus but there’s a professional photographer elf, who will take a photo and video of every guest. After the visit you can buy the photos and videos but there’s no obligation so if you just want to see the man himself and have a quick chat, you can do it without having to pay for it.

Cross the Arctic Circle

Another popular attraction in Santa Claus Village Rovaniemi is the Arctic Circle, which runs right through the village. Visitors can cross the Arctic Circle and receive a certificate as proof of their Arctic Circle crossing. It’s a fun and unique way to commemorate your trip to this special part of the world.

Reusable hand warmers can provide extra warmth for your hands. They are especially useful during outdoor activities or when taking breaks from skiing.

First-aid kit

Pack a small first-aid kit including essentials like pain relievers, bandages, and any necessary prescription medications. Also, consider bringing a first-aid manual and any necessary equipment for emergencies like a compact shovel and a compact saw if you’re planning to do a more adventurous activities.

Although it may be cold, the sun can still be intense and damaging, especially when reflecting off the snow. Pack a high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from sunburn.

Of course there are other more unique and charming places around but Rovaniemi is a good starting point for a quick getaway. Travel to Rovaniemi – The Capital of Lapland

Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, is mostly known as the hometown of Santa Claus and the Northern Lights but there’s so much more to do and see there. If you arrive early in the day we suggest checking out the museums, shops and cozy cafes or get active right away and join one of our many Lapland tours available.

If you’re interested in nature tours then Rovaniemi is surrounded by multiple national parks that all can be visited as a day tour. You can read more about the best national parks in Finland from our blog. If you had a long flight and want to relax and get a good night’s sleep, try out the Finnish sauna. Interested in more adventurous activities? No problem! You can try snowmobiling, ice climbing and ice floating.

Full Day Lapland Adventure

Your second day in Rovaniemi is full of some of the best things to do in Lapland. The day will start with a visit to an authentic reindeer farm. As we’re strong believers in regenerative and sustainable travel, we only work with traditional reindeer farms. Visiting a reindeer farm is a good way to learn about reindeer herding, which is an integral part of the culture in Lapland, and especially important for the indigenous Sámi people. Of course you will also be able to do a short reindeer safari before enjoying a delicious lunch cooked over open fire.

After your visit to the reindeer farm, it’s time to try out one of the highlights of your trip to Lapland – husky safari. An important thing to note is that husky dogs are not native to Finnish Lapland, so virtually all of them have been bred there for tourism purposes. That’s why it’s important to carefully choose which farm you visit and all our husky tours go to small, family run farms, not crowded touristy places. In the farm you get to ride the husky dogs and take pictures with them. There’s just something magical about gliding through the snowfields of Lapland on a husky-pulled sleigh!

In the evening it’s time for the Northern Lights tour. Your guide will take you far away from all the light pollution, so you’d have the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Before the tour starts your guide will determine where the highest possible chance for seeing the Auroras is. You might visit a few different locations and even travel as far as Sweden to see the Northern Lights. This is a true Aurora hunting tour where your guide will do the best for you to see this unpredictable natural phenomenon.

Korouoma Canyon & Frozen Waterfalls Adventure

On your third day in Rovaniemi it’s time to head out into the wilderness and explore the beautiful snow covered forest, canyons and admire the impressive frozen waterfalls. This beautiful natural reserve is also a home to many animal species so keep your eyes open and maybe you will spot tracks made by wolves, lynx, wolverines, moose, reindeer, weasels or Arctic hare. During the tour you will also learn about the arctic nature, survival skills and enjoy a delicious Finnish barbecue lunch. Visit Santa’s Village, Arctic Adventure

On your fourth day you will do a half day Arctic adventure before some free time. During the tour you will get to try 5 different activities – snowshoeing, orienteering, ice-fishing, survival skills and making a fire. While you snowshoe through the magical snowy forests, your guide will explain to you about the basic survival skills and teach you how to orientate with a map and a compass. Once you reach the frozen lake, your guide will tell you how to make a fire, without using matches or lighter. Because you can’t survive without food, you will drill a hole in the frozen lake and try ice-fishing. If you’re lucky and catch a fish, your guide will show you how to prepare it.

After the tour it’s time to relax and do your own thing. Visiting Santa’s Village is one of the highlights in Rovaniemi so if you have enough energy go there to explore the place on your own. Because it’s free to visit Santa’s Village and it’s easy to get there and back, we don’t suggest paying for a tour. That way you also have plenty of time to explore all the corners of the village on your own and spend as much time there as you wish, without having to stick to a strict tour schedule. Go take a photo with Santa Claus himself, send postcards to the loved ones from Santa’s Post Office and get a certificate for crossing the arctic circle. Of course there are plenty of dining and shopping options there as well so expect spending at least a few hours there.

This third largest national park is located in Western Lapland. The Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is dominated by a chain of fells and diverse and varied nature. No matter if you go there in summer or winter there are plenty of activities to do.

If you visit in summer you can find an extensive network of hiking paths and trails there that are suitable for beginners and experienced hikers. It’s also an excellent place for mountain biking, offering magnificent landscapes and meandering paths. If you’d like a more relaxed visit you can opt to go fishing, bird watching, swimming or berry and mushroom picking instead. Due to its location above the Arctic Circle the days in summer are long and let you admire the midnight sun.

In winter it’s great for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or Northern Lights hunting. Pyhä-Luosto National Park

Pyhä-Luosto National Park is located in Lapland, not far from its capital and largest city Rovaniemi, making it easily accessible. The national park is a combination of the oldest national park in Finland, Pyhätunturi and one of the newest parks, Luosto.

There is so much to do in the national park from cross country skiing to bird watching. You can find two ski resorts in the area that are suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers. If you’re looking for more adventurous activities then it’s also a great spot for off piste skiing and ice climbing.

If an active holiday is not your thing then the park is also known for its Sami history and Amethyst mine, which is one of the only jewel mines in the world where visitors are allowed in.

Riisitunturi National Park

Riisitunturi National Park, located in Lapland, has some of the finest sloping bogs and snow covered trees, which are known among nature photographers around the world. It’s a perfect place for cross-country skiers, snowshoers, trekkers, bird watchers and photographers, offering day-trips or longer hikes both in summer and winter. Head there for some breathtaking scenes you can’t even find in the prettiest postcards!

Nuuksio National Park

Close to the capital of Finland, Helsinki, Nuuksio National Park offers lovely lakes, green forests and rugged crags. It’s perfect for a day trip or a longer campout. You can find multiple marked trails for hiking, biking and horse riding there. In winter, the best way to get around is by skiing. You can also find the two-kilometre-long Maahisenkierros Circle Trail there that offers a real nature experience for those in wheelchairs and families with children in pushchairs or prams.

The national park also offers opportunities for both ice and rock climbing, canoeing, swimming, fishing and much more. No matter what the season, you can always find something to do there or why not go there to just breathe fresh air and unwind from everyday life.

Koli National Park

Located in the North Karelia region of Finland, Koli National Park is best known for magnificent vistas. The splendid scenery has attracted many Finnish artists, photographers and nature-lovers for centuries. Koli National Park’s hills and lakes provide a fine setting for memorable outings and activities no matter what the season.

You can find the longest valley in Finland, ten other famous caves, waterfalls, devils, boulders and a ridge running in the lake of Pielinen there. The absolute must-see is the iconic scenery from the top of Ukko-Koli.

In summer you can find multiple hiking trails there both for beginners and experienced hikers. In winter head there for skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. Ukko-Koli has six slopes and is also the most demanding ski resort in southern Finland.
